Use Solidworks to calculate your products carbon footprint.

A key requirment of the Pentland project was to create an eco-sandal. This doesn’t always mean using natural materials, as there are many factors that give a material its associated carbon weighting. I usedCES edupack Eco Selectorto select the most sustainable materials. STEP 1. Create your Model.

First create your model, I use solidworks to create my 3D model. Once the model has been create Its easy to get the mass properties using solidworks measuring tools.

STEP 2. Start to pick your materials.

I had already decided to use cork, using CES edu pack allows me to have accurate data on its density. This can then be used to calculate its weight. (warning be careful when using materials, CES will give in KG and often you will be working in g’s.)

STEP 3. Do some maths, or get Solidworks to do it for you.

You can now do the maths to find the weight. I recommend engineering tool box article to get a complete refresh on the subject of weight, mass and density.


STEP 4. Back to CES to obtain the ‘eco-properties’.

Now you know the weight of you product, you can easily use the values in CES edupack to give a carbon footprint of the materials of your product. It will also consider the Embodied Energy.

STEP 5. Create some metrics.

BONUS STEP A. Compare the materials structurally.

You can use the data within CES to create custom materials for COMOS analysis. This allows a comprehensive mechanical comparison of eco materials. The image below shows that PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates), a Biomer which is stronger than PP (Polypropylene).

BONUS STEP A. Print out your model.

If your lucky enough to have access to a 3D printer, you can print your model out. This allows for a better overview of the form and gave me a chance to see how the product really preformed.
